The Definition of Design

How do you define design?

In fact, what is a definition?

A definition is a description of boundaries.

But how would you define a creative practice that has constantly been pushing boundaries since its inception? Something that is so all-encompassing, exhaustive and inclusive that it barely means the same to two different people?

Well, I’ve tried. But, in the last 7 years of learning, practicing and exploring design, I’ve realized there isn’t a simple way to capture design and creative practice in a couple of words. So here is my list of my favorite attempts at explaining what this field that we truly love stands for –

  1. Design is Problem Solving - Most commonly used and precise definition

  2. Good design is good business - Thomas J. Watson, IBM Chairman and CEO

  3. The expression "1+1=3" could be used to explain design by emphasizing the idea that design is the combination of different elements that can result in something greater than the sum of its parts. In design, different elements such as color, shape, form, and function are brought together to create a cohesive and effective final product. These elements, when combined in the right way, can create something that is more than just the sum of its individual parts, it creates an experience, a feeling, a solution. - Not exactly a definition, but I learnt about this concept in one of my online Interaction design courses and thought that it’s worth sharing

  4. The basic definition of the word “design” is simply to plan something in advance. - Alan Cooper, Interaction Design Org

  5. Achieving goals within constraints - Commonly found on various sources

  6. Design without results is art - Josh Silverman, Master of Interaction Design Programme at California College of Arts

  7. Design is well-developed common sense and logic - Bitopan Kalita, A product designer with an inspiring journey and great work

  8. Design refers to the process of creating a plan or blueprint for the creation of a product, system, or structure. This can include the aesthetic or functional elements, as well as the overall organization and layout of the item. Design can be applied to a wide range of fields, such as architecture, industrial design, graphic design, and fashion design. The goal of design is to create something that is both functional and visually pleasing. - ChatGPT after the input being ‘Define Design’

  9. Design is hope made visible! - Anuraj KR , Associate Design Director Deloitte Digital

If you have a definition that you think deserves to be on this list, please feel free to reach out and let me know, I will surely add them here.
